What is Lynx?

Lynx is an early psychosis intervention program that helps people who are experiencing a first episode of psychosis get their lives back on track and stay well. We work individuals and their families to identify challenges and develop a treatment plan for each person. Lynx serves people between the ages of 14-34 who live in City of Kawartha Lakes, Peterborough, Haliburton, and Northumberland Counties.

What is Psychosis?

Psychosis occurs in about three percent of the population and can be treated effectively. Psychosis affects the ability to accurately determine what is real and what is not real. It usually begins in the teen years and is due to several factors including biology, stress, trauma, and drug use.

Some early signs of psychosis:

  • Friends and family say you seem different
  • Things seem different, unreal, or surreal
  • Not doing well at school or work
  • Not trusting people
  • Withdrawing from friends, family, and activities
  • Decrease or increase in energy

Some common signs of psychosis:

  • Confused thinking
  • Hallucinations
  • Delusions or false beliefs that:
    • You are being followed
    • People can hear your thoughts
    • You have special powers or abilities
    • You know about plots or conspiracies
    • Thoughts are being put into your head
  • Changes in behaviour, mood, and/or communication
  • Suicidal thoughts, depression, anxiety

Why Get Help Early?

Research shows that if psychosis is identified early, many problems can often be prevented and people can live meaningful and satisfying lives. With early treatment, people get better faster and stay well longer. Medication can be useful for acute symptoms. School, work, family, and social relationship are also important for getting and staying well.

Early intervention involves working with individuals and families to:

  • Support an active healthy lifestyle
  • Learn to recognize early warning signs
  • Learn to manage stress in health ways
  • Avoid triggers and prevent relapse
  • Build a social support network
  • Have fun with friends
  • Enjoy meaningful work and school
